Outhouse Door
How I built an outhouse door using pretreated 1x4s and 1x6s.
Aside from a few more pieces of siding, I decided I had to put a door on our outhouse at the shack before hunting this weekend. My sister will be joining and she might appreciate that. The previous interior door was destroyed by the weather in less than a year. To build the door, I bought 1x4 and 1x6 green treated boards.
The opening in the outhouse is 80"x29". This let me lay 7 of the 1x4s to create a 78"x26" door. I had to cut the boards to 78" from their original 96" using a circle saw. I also purchased some 1x2s for door stops so the gap shouldn't be much of a problem.
After cutting the board lengths, I then used 1x6s at 26" inches for braces at the bottom, middle and top of the door. I secured everything with some left over 1 and 3/4" screws. They were too long but since I planned to do the same on both sides of the door, it didn't matter.
Once I had the boards anchored and lined up, I clamped the long boards together and set a screw in each board. I really should have taken my time to line up all the screws but no one will notice but me.
I cut cross braces and repeated the process on both sides of the door.
Finally, I cut the required half-moon in the door using a jig saw and a little bit of a sawsall.
I'm really happy with how the door turned out. I will definitely need to buy some more heavy-duty hinges as the door is quite heavy.
